Library Goals:
To help all students become independent, effective learners, equipped for life during and after school years.
We do this by:
Providing a wide range of up to date, relevant resources with an effective computer catalogue system for locating these resources. Students use fast Internet computers both in class time and at Recess and Lunchtimes.
Providing friendly trained staff willing to assist and advise students.
Providing a range of resources, both print and non print in a variety of formats so students will be confident in using books and computers.
Teaching Information Skills to students, to enable them to use libraries to locate, understand and use resources effectively and critically.
Teaching Year 7 students to summarise, avoiding plagiarism, then participate in group oral presentations. Students gain confidence and skills which will help them in every subject throughout high school.
Working with class teachers to select innovative resources for the library which are relevant to every syllabus and tailored to meet the needs of individual students.
To help improve the Literacy Levels of all students.
In today’s busy world, reading and writing are often neglected. TV and computers absorb so much time. Unfortunately, Literacy levels have suffered. This hinders progress in any subject. Do you realise that there is far more reading required in the School Certificate Science exam, than in English exams?
Parents are important role models and they can work together with the school to improve literacy. If students see parents read (newspapers, magazines, books etc) then they are likely to follow this example. Discussing what has been read is invaluable!
20 minutes reading a day will improve Literacy levels. We not accept that a student has “no homework”. Students are expected to read their notes, library books etc if no “set” work is given.
Year 7 students participate in a “Reading Blitz”, a keen competition between classes. The winning class has a Morning Tea with the Principal. Parents are invited and Merits awarded. Incorporated in this competition is the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Jamison High students have been invited to the first three Receptions at Government House in recognition of their success. In the last two years every Year 7 student has completed the Challenge of reading at least 20 books. Many students exceed their quota by dozens!
We foster the love of reading by providing interesting books, magazines etc in an atmosphere conducive to reading. New books are displayed and suggestions from students and teachers regarding purchase of new books are welcomed.
Peer Reading is held in the library every morning. Reluctant readers read to older students and develop skills and confidence in a non threatening environment.
To provide a safe, friendly environment integral to learning in the school.
The air conditioner has made this learning centre more comfortable. We are grateful to all those in the school community who were involved in fundraising during 2002.
During class time teachers bring classes to research using books, Information Files, magazines or the 21 computers available for student use.
Students make the library a busy place at recess and lunchtimes. Student monitors are a great help. Students visit: to find information for assignments, study or complete homework often using computers; to look for and read books for pleasure eg. Fiction, sport, hobbies; to play chess; or to use the student photocopier.
Senior students often use the Library in their Study periods to study in a comfortable environment, using a range of library resources such as Newspapers, HSC past exam papers and Study Guides.
The Library is also used for Staff Meetings, Interviews, Presentations, Careers Days, Debates and Public Speaking.
Teachers’ Aides often work with Special Needs students using library resources and various workplaces.
